LIEUTENANT COLONEL MICHAEL RUNEY

LTC Michael Runey received a commission as a Field Artillery lieutenant in 1991 from the United States Military Academy. Shortly thereafter he married Lieutenant Christiana Cassidy; they were soon assigned to Korea as part of the 2nd Infantry Division.

Since then, LTC Runey has served in numerous leadership and staff positions across the world, such as leading a platoon fighting forest fires in Montana, commanding A/33 Field Artillery (MLRS) in Bamberg, Germany, and teaching military history at West Point. His deployments include Bosnia with the 1st Infantry Division and Iraq twice with the 4th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.

During LTC Runey's most recent tour in Iraq, he served as the leader of Multinational Division-Baghdad's Red Team, and then as the Division's Chief of Plans at the end of the surge and during the transition to Iraqi civil control.

From 2009 to 2011 LTC Runey led over 300 cadets of the Nittany Lion Battalion at Pennsylvania State University as the Professor of Military Science, raising the next generation of army leaders.

LTC Runey's education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy, a Master of Arts degree from the Pennsylvania State University, the Army's Command and General Staff College, and the University of Foreign and Military Cultural Studies.

LTC Runey's awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal, Air Assault Badge, and the Parachute Badge.
