Hazardous Waste Management Program
Hazardous Waste (HW) is any discarded material (solid, liquid, or gas) that is potentially harmful to human health or the environment because of its quantity, concentration, or biological or physical characteristics.
Hazardous Waste Accumulation Points (HWAPs) are provided within the motor pools to ensure that waste is segregated properly and disposed of appropriately. In order to ensure that our HWAPs are kept to the required standard, certain guidelines must be followed.
| Bring HW inside HWAP daily. | Maintain records of monthly inspections in HWAP. |
| HW buildings must be easily accessible and kept clean and orderly. | Fire extinguishers must be kept on site and must be inspected on a regular basis. |
| HWAPs should not be used for any purpose other than the storage of HW. | When large containers are ¾ full call the Environmental Division (ED). |
| HW must be properly segregated into labeled containers. | Smoking and open flames are prohibited. |
| There should be only one container per waste stream. | Keep sufficient spill equipment to clean up smaller spills. |
| Never use secondary containments for disposal of waste oil or HW. | Report all spills to the fire department! |
